Postnatal Health
There’s been something crucial that I’ve learnt over the last two years of motherhood - we’ve lost touch with the essential art of really nourishing ourselves as new mothers! There’s some pretty demanding requirements of pregnancy, birth, feeding, sleep deprivation and the adjustment to the new shape our life has taken. The aftereffects can last for many years if we aren’t prioritising our ability to recover after each phase of the journey.
The thing is though, mothers are the centre of family well-being. If we are not taking care of ourselves, the whole unit can feel the impact of that.
I’ve been there. I still have days there. You know, the ones where you’ve been up several times with your child. You’re wrecked by the time the sun comes up. You reach for more than your usual daily quota of coffee. You’re so tired that you don’t feel like stomaching anything more than a piece of toast. You forget to have your greens. You skip the yoga class. But not for a nap. Instead, when your child naps, you grab an audience-less shower and you tidy the remnants of the hurricane that came through in the previous hour, burning off just that last bit of steam.
At its core, postnatal depletion is the understandable outcome of a series of less-than-ideal events leading to a multi-level depletion of a woman’s well-being.
Before motherhood, many modern women are already close to the maximum capacity of what her body can handle. Conception and pregnancy require huge amounts of physical resources, and then the baby’s delivery places further strain on these physical resources. Bottle or breastfeeding a baby requires more precious resources. Throw sleep deprivation into the mix, and it really is no surprise that new Mums can feel overwhelmed, overworked, overstimulated, and overneeded.
My goal is to help mothers not only prevent depletion but also recover from it! Mum’s need as much of a solid start as our babies do!
Together, we will work on rebuilding both micronutrients and macronutrients, hormones, energy and sleep.
