We all have a story that led us to where we are today…

Something that fuels our fire and our desire to help people get better.

For most of us with a career in healthcare, we were once unwell ourselves. Or we have watched someone close to us suffer. And generally, we feel called to be a part of the solution!

For me, it has been all of those things. I hit my “rock bottom” with an autoimmune disorder, and I’ve watched people close to me suffer from their own form of a health crisis.

In 2013, I was burnt out, over-anxious, utterly exhausted and quite inflamed as a result of Graves disease. I realised quickly that the conventional medicine model (while it most certainly has its place), wasn’t the right fit for me and went on search for some more holistic methods to help my immune system get back on track. I wanted to be treating the cause, not the symptoms of Grave’s. The best way to do this was to focus on what I was putting IN my body, and the health of my gut (did you know, our immune tissue is in our gut, fascinating huh?!).

I realised how little consideration I had given my health in the past and all of a sudden my health had become my biggest consideration.

I made changes to my diet (removing the major inflammatory culprits - sugar, wheat, dairy, caffeine and alcohol), implemented more restorative practices in my life (no more running, but a lot more yoga and mindfulness practices), played around with supplement regimes, and got more rest.

I noticed some gradual, and some big changes and managed to get back on my feet relatively quickly.

I felt empowered and was inspired to help people feel the same empowerment to regain their own health and wellness.

So, I went back to school. Got a few fancy letters to follow my name - studied holistic nutrition, became a yoga teacher, learnt about our gut microbiome and Body Ecology and also gained a certificate in genetic testing.

Since then, I’ve also been fortunate enough to become a Mum and over the last two years have navigated my way through postnatal depletion, the anxieties of becoming a new Mum, breastfeeding and sleep deprivation. And this is where my real work and learning has been.

I’ve had to change tact, peeling back the layers and going back to the basics of nourishing myself. Starting from scratch in some ways - again, removing the inflammatory culprits that had snuck back in (hello caffeine). I’ve had to ensure that I truly nourish myself with good food (and as much rest as possible) in order to be the best Mum that I can be. With my biggest passion now being to inspire all mothers to do the same for themselves!

Mothers are the centre of family well-being. And if we are not taking care of ourselves and optimising our health, the whole family unit can feel the impact of that.
